Child Sexual Exploitation

08/06/2020

In addition to the government providing £30 million last year to tackle the offenders of child sexual exploitation and to safeguard victims, the Home Secretary recently announced that the government are investigating child sexual exploitation by groups of perpetrators in order that vulnerable children can be better safeguarded.

Many such groups have come to light and have been in the media over recent years, often involving alleged failings by local authorities and other agencies, including the police, towards the victims.  The National Crime Agency will be investigating and prosecuting numerous individuals for child sexual exploitation offences over the coming years and the issue does not appear to be going away any time soon.

It is hoped that the government’s investigation will enable professionals and society generally to understand the nature and scope of child sexual exploitation and to put better measures into place to help prevent such abhorrent crimes taking place,  identify offenders, successfully prosecute those involved in child sexual exploitation and assist victims.

Keoghs understand that the Home Office is setting up an external group of experts to review and comment on the investigation’s research and conclusions prior to its publication and more comment will follow….
