
Matthias has been an insurance lawyer in the City of London for over 15 years and joined Keoghs as a partner in 2024. He has wide experience of coverage and defence work and specialises in Financial Institutions (FI), Directors & Officers (D&O) and Warranty & Indemnity insurance, as well as cyber insurance, data privacy and artificial intelligence (AI).
Bilingual in English and German, Matthias frequently handles cross‑border matters involving multiple jurisdictions. He has significant experience navigating disputes in both English and German‑speaking markets and regularly works with international insurers, brokers, counsel and corporate policyholders.
Matthias has been involved in many of the major issues affecting the FI/D&O market in recent years, including financial institutions’ subprime exposures and resulting shareholder and regulatory actions; “cum ex” transactions; directors’ breach of fiduciary duty claims with respect to collateral debt obligation portfolios; neglect of significant bad loans in M&A deals involving European financial institutions or directors’ breach of fiduciary duty. He also has extensive experience of prospectus liability claims.
In his cyber, data privacy and AI practice, Matthias advises on the full spectrum of cyber and technology‑related exposures and insurance products. He has acted as coverage counsel for insurers on a range of high‑profile cyber incidents in the financial services, transportation, telecommunications, global internet services and online fulfilment sectors. He also has significant experience in the SME space. In addition, Matthias advises clients on data breaches, media liability (including the defence of claims for intellectual property infringements), and cryptocurrency‑related issues.
Matthias regularly speaks on emerging AI‑related risks, including insurers’ underwriting and claims challenges, the convergence of cyber coverage and AI, and the evolving AI risk landscape for financial institutions. He has engaged directly with regulators on developing industry standards and contributed to various consultations on AI in law and insurance.
Matthias is a solicitor of England and Wales, also admitted in the Republic of Ireland. He holds a Bachelor of Law with German Law and, before becoming a solicitor, was called to the Bar of England and Wales by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn.
