A prolific conman who made up multiple van crashes to make more than £33,000 from fraudulent insurance claims and then went on the run to evade justice has been jailed for three years and five months.
The 26-year-old from Birmingham took out five motor insurance policies with Aviva, using the details of unwitting friends and family, between 30th June 2011 and 30th July 2012. Within a month of taking out the policies he reported that the ‘insured’ vehicles had been involved in smashes and put in claims for vehicle repairs, personal injuries and replacement vehicle hire.
The cases were referred to IFED, and following their investigation, Abdul Qadeer Qadri was sentenced to 38 months in prison for the fraud and three months for contempt of court to be served consecutively.
Keoghs’ fraud ring team acted on behalf of Aviva to repudiate a number of claims submitted by Abdul Qadri and assisted in preparing the case for referral to the IFB and IFED. Ruth Needham, Keoghs’ director of fraud rings commented:
“This case is yet another excellent example of the industry working together to ensure that justice is achieved on behalf of insurers and the innocent policyholders affected by the unscrupulous activities of fraudsters. Fraudsters should be aware that the industry will not stand for this type of activity and they are running a high risk of being prosecuted.”
